About Moulin De Valette
A traditional French water mill
Perfect for a family vacation, group holiday or even weekend getaway inside an authentic French holiday house that can inspire you and your family and friends, offering you the best French countryside experience you would wish for! See some details about our vacation house below.
Moulin de Valette is an authentic traditional French water mill, built around 1850. The mill uses the water from the lake in front of the mill. Recent archeological findings have indicated that back in the Middle Ages there was already a water mill belonging to a slightly higher built castle. In present day, Moulin de Valette is a large holiday house consisting of: miller’s house, water mill and a small house on the dam. There are various barns around the terrain, and the land lies completely free in a countryside setting with an own terrain of 12 Hectares, of which 5 Hectares private lake.
The living quarters consist of the ‘miller’s house’ and the ‘small house’. Moulin de Valette is situated on a lake in between two creeks which run from the lake alongside the house.
The buildings consist of:
- The water mill itself, with a turbine at the lowest level. There are 4 floors to the water mill, consisting of the turbine level, the millstone, grain milling equipment, transport belts to transport the grain and flour. Most of the equipment is still in original state.
- The miller’s house with basement below, living quarters with terrace and an apartment that we built in the upper level.
- Small house on the dam
- Barns, built against the mill
- Barns, built along the road on the dam and in the back alongside the creek.
On the 1st floor of the miller’s house, there is the living room with a fireplace combined with open large kitchen of 45m². The kitchen is fully furnished with dishwasher and all sorts of cooking equipment (pots, pans, knives, etc). Next to this are two smaller rooms, one a bedroom, the other a study room with a small fire stove. On this level there is also a (basic) toilet and shower.
The apartment on the 2nd floor (70 m²) has a seating area with TV, bathroom, separate toilet and large bedroom (25m²).
In the ‘small house’ there are 5 bedrooms: 3 bedrooms of 15m² on the ground floor with double beds, 2 bathrooms (1x bath, 1x shower) and upstairs a similar size bedroom for 3-4 persons with single beds. Recently we have also built a room for our grandchildren with 2 children’s beds.
A perfect spot for relaxation
From inside the furnished apartment and quarters you have a very nice view of the lake on northwest side, and the romantic, green creek valley in the back (southeast). You can find spots everywhere where you can seclude yourself completely, read a book or simply relax and enjoy the lake view and the entire French country landscape, even when you are with a large group.
Next to the lake at the small house we have a small man-made sand beach which we replenish with sand every year during spring to make it easy to get into the water; it is a nice place for children to play. Floating devices are present for children. A large raft with swimming stairs is situated in front of the mill at the lake which is easily accessible. A rubber boat with electric motor is also available. The water is tested and completely safe to swim.

General view of things to see and do around Moulin de Valette during your vacation
The villages and towns in the surrounding area have a market every week, as such it is possible to go and enjoy the local food marketplace every day of the week. There are several restaurants and local food places in the area where you can have a simple but ‘bourgoundian’ meal. The region is beautiful, and the real wine territory of the Bourgoundy region starts at about 45 minutes East of Moulin de Vallette. Hiking in the beautiful surroundings is also possible. There are several golf courses available up to 30 minutes to 1hr driving distance. The surroundings are also perfectly suited for cycling, mountain biking and horse riding. Canoeing is possible on the Loir and there is a go-cart circuit in Gueugnon, the closest town.
Larger cities which are less than an hour drive are Chalon sur Saône, Beaune en Autun with nice city centres and adorable squares. Digoin is a bit smaller, and lies at 20 minute drive, situated next to the Loir with an aquaduct. Bourbon-Lancy is about 30 minute drive, with a medieval center and old thermals. Paray le Monial, 20 mins, nice restored city with a basilica (copy of the destroyed basilic of Cluny) and pilgrimage site. North of the department (Soane et Loire) is Morvan. Beautiful ‘rougher’ region with forests. East of Moncea les Mines (not a lot of character, lots of stores) is the wine region of this department.
The ‘Oppidun de Bibract’ is the early capital of Gaul (approx 2000 years ago). There are now sites and there is a wonderful museum. The ruins of Bibract are an eight hundred meter high mountain in the Morvan, 45 min. Drive to Autun and then turn to St-Léger-sous-Beuvray, where it is indicated.
Brionnais, the area SE of Digoin is a trip worth. Romanesque churches everywhere. It’s nice to go on Monday to the market in Marcigny and then have lunch at dream village of Semur en Brionnais.
